Agege Chairmanship: Tensions continue as disqualification of Obasa's son rekindles Scrutiny of Egunjobi’s Tenure

08 May, 2025

In a developing political drama that has captivated the Agege Local Government Area, politicians and residents have continued to express joy over the disqualification of Abdulganiyu, son of the Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa as candidate in the forthcoming chairmanship election.

Many of the residents had seen the action as an attempt to further muzzle their democratic voices.

More hits were the politicians who had, several months ago, expressed interests in the chairmanship position of the Agege Local Government Area.
Many had engaged in political mobilisations and other activities to gear-up their support-base before full campaigns would begin.

While the grumbling lasted, it was learnt that the matter got to the attention of President Bola Tinubu and Ganiyu was stopped from continuing with his campaign.
Obasa had foisted Ganiyu on the political leadership of Agege and picked the APC chairman in the local government, Tunde Disco, as his running mate.

However, it is learnt that the storm is yet to cease as there are political machinations over who becomes the candidate.

Sources within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Agege alleged that the choice of Abdulganiyu as a replacement for Ganiyu Egunjobi, the incumbent chairman of the local government area is multi-pronged.

First, there are the arguments of the Speaker trying to create what some described as 'political fiefdom'.
"Some of us also feel that Egunjobi's closeness to him retarded Egunjobi's performance.

Go to Orile-Agege and see how people have continued to praise the chairman there. Despite the fact that Orile-Agege is an LCDA, Johnson Babatunde outperformed our expectations.

"Over here, all we hear is that the chairman is under the full control of the Speaker and cannot do anything. Now, his son was expecting to come in so that they can keep covering the files. Someone else among the party faithful should be allowed to go there," one of those eyeing the position said.

There have been soft allegations of financial improprieties against Egunjobi's administration by the people of the council.

The sources suggest that while Egunjobi's real motive is to enjoy political soft landing and immunity though supporting Abdulganiyu, and Tunde Disco, a politician who is over 64 years old, was considered as deputy so the latter could use his experience to guide the young and inexperienced Abdulganiyu.

"Come to Agege, you would see how public sentiments reflect a lack of confidence in Egunjobi's performance.

"We can't effectively identify even five major road projects completed during his current term," the source added.

This underwhelming record comes despite substantial infrastructural investments by both the Lagos State Government and the Federal Government, including the notable railway project traversing the area.
To ensure that this interest remained safeguarded in the local political landscape, Egunjobi reportedly orchestrated the sidelining of his deputy, Gbenga Abiola, popularly known as Agbelebu; who had garnered strong grassroots support as a youthful and dynamic mobiliser, according to a member of a youth group in the area.

With the 2025 local government elections drawing close, tensions continue to rise. The political atmosphere in Agege is fraught with uncertainty.

Stakeholders and constituents alike are watching closely as the outcome of these maneuvers could reshape the future of leadership in the local government.
