On Friday, February 14th, the Assembly leadership sent a letter to the DSS, claiming the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, posed a serious threat and might storm the Assembly on February 18th. The letter, signed by Acting Clerk ATB Ottun, demanded heightened security.
In response, the DSS and police quickly deployed officers, positioning them strategically around the Assembly complex. But here's the question: Why did lawmakers today act as if they were completely unaware of the DSS presence? Was it a case of different DSS operatives showing up? And if so, where did the original ones go? Something is definitely off, and the Assembly leadership owes the public answers. The DSS, too, needs to clear the air and avoid being painted in a negative light.
It's truly sad to witness Lagos slipping further into chaos under the same leader who once basked in the title of "architect of modern Lagos." If this is the "modern Lagos" he envisions, then perhaps it's best if we stop asking for any more progress, because it's already a mess.
The fact that the Assembly, in exercising its constitutional rights, has sparked a full-blown crisis is almost unimaginable. The damage done is already severe, and the extent of the fallout remains to be seen.
For the supposed “supreme leader,” this scandal is a major blow to his democratic credentials. His failure to take charge of this situation from the start and his inability to handle those he claims undermined him only reveals his weaknesses. A strategist, indeed!
At this point, the time to act is long past.
