DAILY POST learnt that the confirmation is sequel to the request sent by the State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, who urged members of the Assembly to confirm the nominees.
Our correspondent recalls that Makinde had on Tuesday forwarded the names of the members of Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) to the State House of Assembly.
The eight prospective members were Barrister Isiaka Olagunju as Chairman, while Comrade Adeniyi Afeez Babatunde, Alhaja Ganiyat Saka, Mr Olanrewaju Emmanuel, Chief Kunle Agboola, Mr Remi Ayoade, Mr Sunday Falana and Mr Adeojo Elias are members.
In the letter announcing the composition of the board by the Governor read by the Speaker, Makinde said “The board members are eminently qualified to be appointed as members of OYSIEC to oversee and conduct elections into our Local Government Areas based on their track records.”
However, the House of Assembly has confirmed the nominees to serve as members of the electoral commission.
The confirmation was done during the house plenary on Thursday in Ibadan, the state capital.
The eight members are to conduct local government election in all the 33 local government areas and 35 local council development areas in the state.
Speaker of the House, Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin in his remarks, described the newly appointed Committee members as people of proven integrity whose honesty and forthrightness is not in doubt.
“I, therefore, urge you to bring your professional experiences to bear in your new assignment as the Oyo State Government has reposed its confidence in you hence we expect you to conduct free and fair Local Government elections for the state.”
