Lagos Implements Strict Measures to Eliminate Street Trading in Ikoyi, Lekki, and Victoria Island

10 October, 2023

The Lagos State Government has taken decisive action to eradicate street trading in the upscale areas of Ikoyi, Lekki, Victoria Island and environs.

In an effort to promote a cleaner and safer environment, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced a zero tolerance policy on all forms of street vending and the display of goods on walkways and setbacks in these areas.

To ensure strict enforcement of this policy, mobile courts will be deployed to dispense justice to any offenders caught violating the state's environmental sanitation laws. This initiative aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's T.H.E.M.E.S. PLUS Agenda, aimed at creating a greener and more sustainable Lagos, while prioritizing the safety and well-being of its residents.

Commissioner Wahab expressed concern about the presence of traders at bus stops, roundabouts, and pedestrian bridges, noting that their activities not only detract from the aesthetics of the city but also pose risks to their own safety and the security of others. The ongoing enforcement drive is part of an ongoing effort to restore the original masterplan and enhance the overall appeal of these areas.

By cracking down on street trading in Ikoyi, Lekki, and Victoria Island, Lagos is taking firm steps towards creating a more orderly and visually pleasing urban landscape, fostering a safer environment, and preserving the well-being of its inhabitants.
