AFCON 2021: Cameroon with a Remarkable Comeback to Claim Third Place

The Host Nation Cameroon produced a remarkable comeback from three goals down to defeat Burkina Faso on penalties to win bronze following a 3-3 stalemate at the ongoing TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations, Cameroon 2021.

Indomitable Lions were down 3-0 through Burkina Faso's Steve Yago's poked finish, Andre Onana's own goal and Djibril Ouattara's header at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo in Yaoundé.

Cameroon coach Antonio Da Concecao made changes introducing captain Vincent Aboubakar after Burkina Faso a 2-0 lead at half-time but it was Burkinabe adding another goal five minutes after the restart to give the Stallions of Burkina Faso a 3-0 advantage. Cameroon hit back through Stephane Bahoken and skipper Vincent Aboubakar, who netted twice in the last five minutes secured the Golden boot.

No extra time meant the match went to penalties, Cameroon converted all five spot kicks while Burkina Faso's Ibrahim Blati Toure missed the decisive penalty in the shootout when his penalty was saved by Onana. Oyongo Bitolo then scored the winning penalty for Cameroon to ensure the Indomitable Lions finished third and win bronze in the tournament.
