In a statement released yesterday, Otedola praised the project, highlighting its significance to every Lagosian and resident of the state. Governor Sanwo-Olu marked the beginning of commercial operations for the train service on the Blue line rail by embarking on a maiden passenger train ride from Marina Terminal to Mile-2 Station on Monday.
As the first passenger at the Marina Station, the governor experienced the approximately 25-minute journey, with 90-second stoppages at each of the five stations before reaching the final destination.
Otedola expressed his delight, stating, "This should gladden and make every Lagosian proud. The essence of governance is to build world-class infrastructure for the benefit of the people." He commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for his unwavering leadership and determination to transform the state's transportation, health, security, power generation, and enabling business environment with world-class infrastructure.
Highlighting the governor's focused efforts and limited resources, Otedola stated, "He has shown tremendous courage in his capability to undertake significant projects, even when faced with challenges." Recognizing the Blue Line Rail as a signature project, Otedola mentioned the upcoming red line as further cause for celebration.
The billionaire emphasized that the new rail infrastructure would enhance the lives of Lagos residents, providing greater comfort, reducing commuting time, relieving traffic congestion, and cutting transportation costs. Otedola encouraged other states to follow Lagos' lead in their own infrastructure development and called on well-meaning Nigerians to continue supporting Governor Sanwo-Olu's government in its mission to transform Lagos.
Regarding the protection of the ultra-modern facility, Otedola urged residents to ensure its safety so that it continues to serve its intended purpose effectively.
Constructed by the Lagos State Government and supervised by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), the Blue Line Rail project is part of the overall plan to develop and improve intermodal transport systems within the state. While the project was initiated during the tenure of former Governor Babatunde Fashola, it was completed under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's administration, covering a 13km stretch from Marina to Mile 2 on the Lagos-Badagry corridor.
The Blue Line Rail project was commissioned in January 2023 by former President Muhammadu Buhari. Designed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the visionary first Governor of Lagos State, the Red Line Rail project is currently 96% complete and is expected to be commissioned by Tinubu before the year's end.
As Lagos celebrates the successful completion of the Lagos Blue Rail, it stands as a testament to the state's commitment to providing improved transportation infrastructure for its residents while setting an example for other states in Nigeria to emulate.
