Mali: African presidents get warning after Keita’s ouster

Mali: African presidents get warning after Keita’s ouster

19 August, 2020

Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has warned African presidents to learn from the situation in Mali.

President Ibrahim Keita and his government resigned after a military coup on Tuesday.

In a statement on Wednesday by the spokesman, Imo Ugochinyere, CUPP welcomed “the belated resignation of the disgraced Malian President, Keita and dissolution of the parliament.”

“It is unfortunate that Mr. Keita was willing to drag his country to anarchy just because he wanted to cling to power despite being unpopular with his citizens.”

CUPP urged Malians to remain vigilant until democracy is restored through early elections.

The body called for the immediate release of opposition leader who has been in captivity for months.

It advised other leaders in Africa to stop taking their people for granted and desist from abuse of office.

“We urge the M5-RFP opposition along with the June 5 Movement to ensure that the opposition family remains one, the dying economy revived and armed killer groups destroyed.”

Malian soldiers have explained why Keita was booted out.

The mutineers have also announced their next line of action.
