Cristiano Ronaldo breaks all-time FIFA Goals record

Written by 14 March, 2022
Cristiano Ronaldo's hat-trick against Tottenham moved him past Josef Bican as FIFA's all-time leading goalscorer in competitive matches. In 2020, FIFA recognized Prague-born Bican's total of 805 goals as the most in world football, and Ronaldo's unstoppable long-range strike brought him level. It was Ronaldo's 59th hat trick of his career and his first for United since his return in 2008. Ronaldo had become only the third player aged 37 or over to score more than once in a Premier League game the other two were Graham Alexander and Teddy Sheringham. This term, Ronaldo has now scored 18 goals in all competitions, and the last time the striker didn’t get into double figures for goals was the 2004/05 season, when he accumulated nine. On 81 minutes, he scored the game-winning header as United scored from a corner kick for the second time this season. Lionel Messi, 34, is the highest…

Chelsea Feel Effects Of Sanctions On Abramovich

Written by 11 March, 2022
Chelsea fans received an unwelcome present on the Premier English League team's 117th birthday Thursday: British government sanctions against Russian owner Roman Abramovich, which only served to exacerbate the team's growing pariah status in the soccer world. The aluminum magnate is one of seven wealthy Russians whose assets were frozen by British sanctions on Thursday in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Under the unprecedented government action, Chelsea will play the rest of the season with a special "Russia Regulations" license that, among other things, prohibits the team from selling new tickets or merchandise or signing new players. The club's future was already in doubt: Abramovich, whose $2 billion investment in Chelsea over 19 years transformed the team into a force in European football, had put the squad up for sale last week amid growing calls for sanctions to be imposed on a man the government has labeled a "pro-Kremlin…

UEFA Opens Disciplinary Case Against PSG Chief Al-Khelaifi After UCL Loss

Written by 11 March, 2022
UEFA has initiated disciplinary proceedings against Paris Saint-Germain President Nasser Al-Khelaifi following heated incidents following the team's Champions League loss to Real Madrid. The Qatari is also a member of UEFA's executive committee, the chairman of the influential European Club Association, and the CEO of Doha-based broadcaster beIN Media Group, which holds key Champions League television rights. The disciplinary case, which also includes sporting director Leonardo, was initiated in response to reports that Al-Khelaifi went in search of match officials on Wednesday night to protest refereeing decisions. PSG was defeated 3-1 in Madrid, sending them out of the round of 16 with a 3-2 aggregate loss. The French side had led 1-0 after the first leg, and Kylian Mbappe scored again in Madrid to give PSG a 2-0 aggregate lead, which was erased by Karim Benzema's hat trick. UEFA confirmed the disciplinary cases had been opened but did not provide…

Liverpool advanced to the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League 2021/22 with a 2-1 aggregate victory over Italian champions Inter Milan. Lautaro Martinez's second-half stunner gave the reigning Serie A champions victory on the night, though Liverpool gained passage after Alexis Sanchez was shown a second yellow card just moments after the goal. Inter Milan became the first team to defeat Liverpool at Anfield in over a year, since Fulham managed a 1-0 victory in March 7, 2021. Salah, who struck the woodwork twice, stated post-match that progress in the competition was the most decisive takeaway on a difficult night in L4. “It was a tough game - they were very good in the away game. We struggled at the start, but the most important thing is that we have qualified,” Salah told BT Sport. “I hit the post twice, it’s OK – maybe next game I will score three!…
